The Voice of Wood: My perspectives in Crafting Steel‑String Guitars

Introduction

Every guitar I build begins with a question: what voice lies hidden in this wood, and how can I bring it out? As a luthier in Singapore, my journey has been shaped by curiosity, respect for materials, and a desire to push beyond convention. With more than 60,000 tree species in the world and fewer than 300 traditionally used in guitar making, I see a vast, untapped palette of tonal possibilities. My guitars are born from this exploration—handcrafted instruments that challenge tradition while honoring the timeless pursuit of sound.

How I Wood Select?

Wood is not just a building material; it is the soul of the guitar.

  • Beyond tradition: While rosewood, spruce, and mahogany have long defined the sound of steel‑string guitars, I seek out unconventional species. Mango wood, for example, offers a distinctive tonal character and striking aesthetic, expanding the guitar’s vocabulary.

  • Mechanical properties matter: When selecting woods, I look beyond species names to their stiffness, density, and elasticity. These traits determine how the guitar will resonate and how the top should later be voiced.

  • Respect for origins: I choose responsibly sourced materials, ensuring that my craft remains socially valued and sustainable. The forests that give life to music deserve reverence.

  • Design through diversity: Pairing contrasting woods is like composing music—each combination creates a unique tonal balance, whether it’s warmth, clarity, or sustain.

How do I voice?

If the back and sides are the body of the guitar, the top board is its heart. It is the diaphragm that translates vibration into tone, and voicing it is where science meets intuition.

  • Mechanical properties guide the process: The stiffness, density, and elasticity of the top wood dictate how it should be braced and carved. These traits determine responsiveness, projection, and tonal color.

  • Harvesting energy: My designs focus on maximizing string energy transfer while minimizing transmission loss. This ensures clarity and responsiveness in every note, from delicate fingerpicking to powerful strumming.

  • Defining tonal clarity: I avoid vague descriptors and instead define tonal qualities through four key attributes—bass response, separation of notes, balance, and sustain.

  • Dialogue with the wood: Each adjustment is guided by how the material behaves under stress and vibration. Voicing is a conversation, and the wood always has the final say.

The Link Between Wood and Voice

Wood selection and voicing are inseparable.

  • A dense back and sides demand a different bracing approach than lighter woods.

  • The stiffness of the chosen top influences how much flexibility it can handle, shaping projection and tonal color.

  • Each guitar becomes a collaboration between material and maker—a conversation where the wood itself helps decide its destiny.

Closing Reflections

My guitars are not just instruments; they are stories told in wood and sound. By exploring unconventional species like mango, carefully voicing each top, and respecting the natural character of materials, I craft instruments that are elegant, responsive, and deeply personal. Each one is a companion for creativity, designed to illuminate the hidden voices within the forest and bring them into the hands of musicians.
